Making the Necessary Humane
An Ancient Problem
Since ancient times, it has been known that immobilizing patients can be an essential part of their medical treatment. However, the associated restraint of hands and feet could also have effects that delayed healing, such as bedsores and anxiety. These restraint methods remained unchanged until the 1960s, when the equally simple and brilliant idea of a concerned father opened a new chapter in the history of patient restraints.
A Toddler’s Misery
This father had a two-year-old son suffering from pneumonia. When the young patient refused to accept the necessary bed rest, the doctors saw no other option but to restrain the boy by his hands and feet. Completely distraught and terrified, the boy then refused all food. Faced with this new problem, the doctors ordered force-feeding. For the desperate parents, this situation was unbearable, and they took their son home at their own risk.
Love is Inventive
In his familiar surroundings, the boy's condition improved quickly, but he still would not stay in bed. That's when his father had the idea for a support belt that would keep his son in bed but still offer plenty of room to move, and above all, leave his hands and feet free. The boy accepted the support belt, stayed in bed, and was able to recover quickly.
A Solution for Many
Several years later, the father learned about the shortcomings of patient restraints in medicine. Many patients had to suffer because they would not observe bed rest or would fall out of bed – a problem he had already solved for his son years before. Renowned physicians recognized the benefits for both patients and nursing staff. Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Bürger-Prinz introduced the new restraint system at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). The SEGUFIX®-System was immediately met with great approval among experts and was soon established as the internationally recognized method of patient restraint.
As Much Freedom of Movement as Possible, with as Little Restraint as Necessary
The medical requirements for restraints are diverse, and sometimes it is necessary to restrain limbs as well. To meet individual needs, our product range has been continuously expanded in close cooperation with healthcare professionals. In all new developments, we follow our guiding principle: "As much freedom of movement as possible, with as little restraint as necessary."
The Humane Restraint
In this regard, the SEGUFIX®-System offers sophisticated positioning and restraint solutions for patients and caregivers. These innovative solutions made targeted restraint possible for the first time, thereby preventing the degrading over-fixation of the past. For this reason, upon its introduction, the SEGUFIX®-System was unanimously described in medical circles as the "humane restraint." In all areas of patient care, including difficult nursing situations, this humane approach provides significant relief for everyone involved.
